I have decided to go back to Uni. After 8 and a half years of Uni previously and less than 3 years in the workforce, I have decided to try another career. I knew halfway through my postgraduate degree that I wasn't going to be happy being a scientist in the long term, but I pushed through and completed my degree. Partly because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. And I like to finish things that I start. Also because I didn't want anyone to think I couldn't do it.
So I have decided to do a Graduate Diploma of Education to become a secondary school science teacher. Working with teenage girls last year in the SISTER2sister program was tough, but so rewarding. Having thought about teaching for a long time, these girls helped to cement my decision. I am really excited about this new direction. The degree will take me two years so I still have some research in me, but it is a start - and I can't wait to get started.

I keep considering teaching, but I missed the cutoff for this year...I love science but its just not "certain" enough sometimes. Good luck :-)
I just wanted to say goodluck with your Dip Ed :) I worked as microbiologist / environmental scientist for many years (after doing a bachelor and honours degree in science), enduring long tedious hours of shift work, before doing my Dip Ed P-12. You will find your Science background so valuable in your teaching career :) I teach Primary, I love Prep - 2 and was Science Coordinator for many years before going on family leave. I will go back next year but pursue a welfare focus :) Enjoy, if you are passionate about your work, it makes it so much easier! Mel xox

How exciting Renee! Good luck and so fantastic that you have made the decision and have gone for it, and if you really want to work with teenagers, even better!
Good on you Renee. A big decision but will make you so much happier in the long run. My elder daughter started a degree through Monash last year - it will take her 6 years.

The education system desperately needs Sceince teachers so you will be snapped up quick. Teaching is an incredible challenge with today's children but can be so rewarding. Saturday was dreadful, I don't know how you managed but it sounds as though your new place has a good vibe. Ann :-)
I so know what it's like to study and strive toward something and then change your mind. There's a lot to be said for being brave and nutting out your dreams.

Congratulations on going back to uni! How exciting, and frankly it shows tremendous self discipline. Monash has brilliant distance education course I looked at them for many years before having kids but alas I have no self disciplane.
